Facts About Rabbits:

1. Rabbits are not rodents, they are lagomorphs.
2. When the doe gives birth her babies are collectively referred to as a litter.
3. The gestation period for a rabbit is 28-32 days.
4. A rabbits teeth never stop growing. There are a total of 28 teeth (only 6 in front are visible; two incisors on top, four lower incisors on bottom).
5. The American Rabbit Breeders Association has 49 recognized breeds of rabbits and 13 recognized breeds of cavy.
6. Rabbits can be house and litterbox trained.
7. Kits get weaned at about 8 weeks old
8. Adult rabbits can weigh between 2 lbs - 20 lbs depending on breed
9. Rabbits can purr similar to a cat
10. Domesticated rabbits are born without fur
11. Domesticated rabbits eyes do not open until they are about 2 weeks old
12. Rabbits cannot vomit
13. Rabbits need hay to assist the digestive system and prevent fur balls in their stomach
14. A group of rabbits is called a herd
15. A group of rabbits live in a warren
16. Mothers typically only feed their kits about 5 minutes a day
17. Rabbit meat is lower in fat, cholesterol and calories than chicken, pork and beef
18. Rabbit meat is all white meat
19. Rabbit droppings make an excellent garden fertilizer
20. A 4 pound rabbit will drink as much water as a 20 pound dog
21. Bunnies love to chew
22. Rabbits do not hibernate
23. Rabbits can jump 36″ and higher
24. Rabbits can suffer heat stroke
25. Rabbits can see behind them, but have blind spot in front of their face.
26. When rabbits are happy, they will jump and twist, this is called a “binky”
27. Rabbits can start breeding as early as 3-4 months of age
28. Predators can literally scare a rabbit to death
29. Does will pull fur when pregnant to assist in the building of their nest
30. Rabbits can have false pregnancies
31. Rabbits groom themselves
32. Domestic rabbits cannot breed with wild rabbits
33. The only place a rabbit sweats is through the pads on its feet
34. Rabbits eat their own droppings called “cecotropes” to obtain certain nutrients they weren’t able to receive the first time
35. There are four types of fur; satin, wool, rex, and normal (two subcategories rollback and fly back)
